In the last few years i pass my time listening to radio klasik 87.7mhz. i grew up in the sixties, seventies and eighties , got influenced with the style, the brand and the feel of music dominantly guitars and strings.Beatles, BeeGees, Paul Mauriat Orchestra, Ray Coniff Singers , Matt Monroe who ruled the English Broadcast airwaves while malay singers like Ahmad Jais, Rafeah Buang,Sharifah Aini,M.Bakri are pillars of the music industry.
60an music was an epic in the malay music indusry.4 or 5 piece band producing spectacular songs blended with beautiful accompaniment and sound of leads guitar. A.Rahman Hassan and A.Ramli are the legend of the 60an era.
The Song "Tak Mengapa' with a parrap parrap added to the lyric made itself outstanding and distinguished (plus the soothing intro and interlude).
J Sham wrote a very meaningful song that suits the lifestyle and mood of that era.The song 'Di pinggir Kali' describes the life of a teacher serving in remote rural area and came to know a broken hearted girl who lives in the village who use to be near a riverside in the late scenic evenings.
The young teacher in the song is the singer himself who godblessed with the talent in song and lyric writings plus a powerful voice range.
Later in the eighties, the trend changed, popular singer depended on a few prominent composers such as Ahmad Nawab, S.Atan and Kassim Masdor to belt out tunes and to arrange music.Minus ones was recorded on separate tracks using professionals and finally added with the singer voice. The fact is the composers controlled the market, and not the singer themselves.
1990ies til now is worst, the music has no feel and no nostalgic elements to be appreciated and no story to tell.Using digitalised sound sampling, MIDI capable keyboard and a PC, minus one were easily delivered.Physical look becomes the selling point and not the voice value...and all those songs never sell as tech is advance which allows us to download it fm the Net.
Nevertheless I love the songs of the yesterday english or in Bahasa. Its pure ,every song had a soul for itself and the voicesof the singers then are bass oriented.
P.Ramlee songs...undeniable strong & listenable and reminds the 50ies & early 60ies.But personaly Sharifah Aini & Rafeah Buang hit and runs deep into my sentimental soul.Song like 'Si Dia' & 'Kenangan diRantau Abang' stil give me the old feeling when i was young.I never been to Rantau Abang but, the story told thru the lyrics makes u feel that you are there and u are in the storyline.
